At HPH, we believe in the power of community and the profound impact that volunteers can make in enhancing the quality of care and patient experience we provide. Our Volunteer Services program offers a diverse range of opportunities for individuals passionate about making a difference or gaining valuable experience in a healthcare environment.


Roles and Responsibilities: Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting both clinical and non-clinical healthcare providers, as well as patients, through various roles, including but not limited to:
  • Providing valuable feedback to improve the patient experience.
  • Assisting patients and visitors with navigation throughout the hospital.
  • Offering companionship and emotional support to patients during their hospital stay.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks such as filing paperwork and answering phones.
  • Supporting special programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the hospital experience for patients and staff.

    Eligibility and Benefits

    Being a volunteer at Humboldt Park Health requires a positive attitude and a desire to serve others. Volunteers may begin any time of the year. Orientations for new volunteers are held frequently and include an overview of Humboldt Park Health and volunteer roles/duties.

  • Minimum age: 16 years old
  • Commitment: 40 hours of service, minimum of 4 hours per week
  • Application: Complete online application, attend an interview and orientation
  • Screenings: Drug screening, health assessment, and background check.
  • Health Requirements: Tuberculosis test, immunity verification for mumps, rubella, rubeola and varicella, or proof of vaccinations/exemptions

    Expectations for Volunteers

    1. Commitment: Volunteers are expected to fulfill their assigned shifts and responsibilities in a reliable and consistent manner.
    2. Professionalism: Volunteers are expected to adhere to the hospital's policies, procedures, and code of conduct at all times.
    3. Confidentiality: Volunteers are expected to maintain the confidentiality of patient information and respect the privacy of patients and families.
    4. Respect and Inclusivity: Volunteers are expected to treat everyone with respect, kindness, and empathy, embracing diversity and promoting inclusivity in all interactions.
    5. Communication: Volunteers are expected to communicate effectively with hospital staff, fellow volunteers, and patients to ensure the smooth delivery of volunteer services.
     

    Volunteer Opportunities

    The Humboldt Park Health Volunteer Services Program offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities across various departments and units within the hospital, including:

  • Greeter: Welcome patients, families, and guests by providing a friendly and helpful first point of contact. Responsibilities include greeting and directing patients and guests, providing information, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. . Bilingual volunteers who are fluent in English and Spanish are preferred but not required.
  • Patient Experience Ambassador: Enhance the patient and family experience by offering support and addressing non-clinical needs. Responsibilities include visiting patients, assisting with wayfinding, and gathering feedback on patient experiences.
  • Patient Companion: Provide companionship and a calming presence to patients. This includes visiting patients, offering conversation and comfort, a listening ear, and assisting with non-clinical needs.
  • Spiritual Care:  Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients and families, respecting diverse faiths and beliefs. Responsibilities include offering prayer or spiritual guidance, and supporting individual spiritual needs.
  • Wheelchair Transportation:  Ensure safe and efficient transport of patients within the hospital. Responsibilities include transporting patients by wheelchair.
  • Patient Escort:  Offer directions and assist patients and guests by accompanying them to their destinations within the hospital.
  • Administrative/Clerical Service: Provide hospital departments with administrative support. Responsibilities may include answering phones, filing documents, entering data, and organization.
  • Patient and Family Advisory Council: Comprised of current and former patients and family and community members, HPH’s Patient and Family Advisory Council members are relied upon to identify and provide input to improve service and the quality of care through discussion and patient-centered perspectives.
  • Community Service: Community Volunteers assist with various activities for different departments that support our community, such as the monthly 'HPH Food Pantry' program, or the Patient Care Closet. Responsibilities for the food pantry include sorting and distributing food items.
  • Special Events: Assist with planning and executing special events such as the organization’s annual gala, community health fairs, fundraisers, as well as various other hospital events throughout the year. Volunteers can assist with event planning, setup, coordination, and other tasks to ensure the success of these initiatives.
  • Marketing: Support the hospital’s marketing efforts. Responsibilities include creating and distributing marketing materials, assisting with social mediate, and participating in outreach activities.
  • Junior Volunteer Program (JVP): this HPH program provides high school students with experience and opportunities to contributed. Administrative or patient and family-centered care positions are available.

    How to Volunteer / Application

    1. Click HERE to fill out an online application AND email it to VOLUNTEER@HPH.CARE
    2. Upon the receipt of your application, we will review it based on your interests, availability and our current openings. If we determine a match, we will contact you for a phone interview.
    3. As part of the interview, we will discuss your placement and schedule. Most placements have a set schedule (same day/time every week). If you don’t think you can commit to a set schedule due to your other responsibilities, please let us know so we can assign you an opportunity that allows for flexibility.
    4. After an interview and acceptance into the program, all candidates will be asked to complete a  new volunteer orientation.
    5. You are now ready to start volunteering!
